Rome bans snacks and food at tourist sites this summer

July 21st, 2008

Rome is synonymous with mass tourism. Its an enviable trait but City Hall is making sure the lot of us won’t cause “irreparably damage the preservation of historical and art areas and monuments and the possibility to enjoy them.”. That’s according to them and due to that reason alone, we are now banned from munching away food and snacks around historical monuments which in Rome, is literally everywhere. Drunks, litterbugs, loiterers and beggars too are shoo-ed from tourist sites.

The anti-snack ban will come into effect this weekend until end of October. So if you’re thinking of enjoying snacks you brought with you while marvelling at Rome’s historical sites, think twice or you might be slapped with an $80 fine.

  1. The authorities should aim to curb irresponsible littering instead of tourist enjoying a snack or two. It’s the litter that does more damage to tourist sites.
